Community discussion at the Soil Factory on pyrolyzing sewage sludge

Faced with the twin problems of PFAS pollution and rapidly diminishing landfill sites, last Sunday (10/15/23) we tackled building a strategy and consensus around the idea of transforming municipal biosolids into biochar.

We know that creating biochar destroys all existing PFAS in the source material, and that the volume reduction using this process is over 90%, thus helping to alleviate the problems above.

These were just a few of the possibilities discussed as Ed Gottlieb from the Ithaca Wastewater Treatment Plant, Cynthia Brock from the Ithaca City Council, State representative Anna Kelles, Soil Factory scientists Rebecca Nelson and Johannes Lehmann, and many more interested and influential people from the community gathered to discuss what we know, what we don’t know, and what we are concerned about.

The goal? To manage wastes in a way that creates value and reduces environmental hazards. Lots more on this topic to come in the near future!
